Broderick 4857707 Creative Development for Sound Design Client ///THX Production Co ///Eyestorm Productions Director ///Michael Klima & Kyle Ruddick For this project I worked doing creative development for the various sounds coming from the various musical organisms in this THX trailer. They used a sound of mine created for the butterfly wing tree leaves. It was created by soldering a small 1" polypropylene speaker onto a quarter-inch cable. The cable was plugged into an out put of my mixer and a feedback loop was created by sending another output back to an input channel. By adjusting the gain staging and EQ I was able to get the tiny plastic speaker to oscillate and various speeds. The sound of the tiny plastic speaker moving became the sound of the butterfly wing leaves flapping on the tree at 00:20. I was thrilled to see my work unexpectedly in the theater when it played before Terry Gilliam's "The Imiginarium of Dr. Parnarsus". This THX trailer has played before feature films world wide. Analog visual effects were creating using video feedback loops and hack video devices together with audio feedback loops that interfere with the video signals. The result is a beautiful and chaotic glitch style used throughout the film. It is as much a video database and online community as it is a feature film experience. The result is a film reminiscent of Baraka that creates a beautiful cinematic portrait of planet earth in one day while telling the stories of the people who shot their day on 10/10/10. Two other films have been shot on 11/11/11 and 12/12/12 which will also become feature films. I composed the music montage by collaging audio samples from over 30 hours of music related footage into a new 6 minute piece of music. Then using an edit decision list all of the sync video clips were retrieve and edit sync to sound in a changing grid format showing the sources of all the sounds being used in the collaged piece of music. The end result is a cinematic musical score with many movements morphing through musicians captured around the world. We encouraged our musically inclined subjects to perform music for us during their interviews and this music was mixed into the film's score, becoming a warm and integral part of the story-telling. During post production I worked as a sound editor and music supervisor. I also worked with well known Los Angeles blues musician Bernie Pearl and produced a recording session to create additional music for the film's score. Pearl is playing the slide guitar along with our first subject who opens the film with a guitar performance.
